Then again, the Sani Resort in Halkidiki is not your run-of-the-mill place. The area is marked with trails, of course, but it was good to have local guide Yannis to take me off the beaten track and point out some of the rarer plants and flowers. In fact, it covers more than 1, acres including around acres of that private reserve which is fringed by pine forests and beautiful beaches.
The atmosphere is, well, relaxed. The nature reserve is huge And upmarket. Five-star all the way with excellent standards of accommodation and service. One contains the monastery of Mount Athos men-only and beloved of Prince Charles. The second has a selection of hotels, but award-winning Sani is on the Kassandra peninsula, the one closest to the mainland. This gives it another advantage. And very nice it was too. From there, I could walk anywhere in the complex and eat anywhere I fancied too. I really liked that. However much you may enjoy a restaurant, after a while it could become boring.
The food covers all styles, from traditional Greek to Italian and Japanese. Lots of fresh ingredients and imaginative ideas. I ate myself silly and loved every moment. One of the hotel's rooms And I liked being able to stroll by the marina at the heart of the complex — lots of Russian yachts while I was there — as well as nosing in the restaurants, bars and boutiques which sell designer clothes and jewellery.
In the evenings, musicians regularly perform and shows and musicals are put on in the free, open-air theatre and in high season an open-air cinema shows the latest films. Very nice they are too. Just the place to chill-out.
And you know what? Travel file When to go: Sani is open from April to November. Spring is lovely, summers are hot and the seas warmest in early autumn.
